Gregory Scuito was working in retail sales in Missouri until his godfather got Alzheimer’s. He saw how the disease impacted his family, and also how the Alzheimer’s Association helped. He started out organizing Alzheimer’s awareness walks and then changed his career. He is now Region Lead for the North Central Texas Alzheimer’s Association. This is the closest office to Starr County, some 225 miles away in San Antonio.
“We have a significant issue that we need to address here in Texas,” Scuito said. Out of the 12 million people providing unpaid care to Alzheimer’s patients across the U.S., more than 1 million of them are in Texas.
“We’re at a point where people don’t want to interact even with the word Alzheimer’s—it’s such a personal and debilitating illness. But because people largely aren’t speaking up, our healthcare system doesn’t fully understand it, and our financial systems don’t prioritize it. So the first and most important thing people can do is share their story. It’s also probably one of the hardest things to do.”
